Carving Shaped: Done by sandblasting, the outline of the design is cut into the surface and the interior elements are shaped by hollowing out certain areas to create a relief look to the design. Often referred to as "Floral Carving" this "shaping" is generally used for flowers and the leaves of plants and trees as well as the hands and wings of angels and saints. Flat: Als o done by sandblasting, but as the name infers, no hollowing or shaping is done when flat carving. Finishes Polished Granite Rock Pitched Granite Sawn Sided Granite POLISHED SURFACES are smooth and shiny. After granite blocks are quarried, they are sawn into slabs of the desired thickness. The sawn surfaces are then polished firstly with a coarse abrasive, then successively finer abrasives until perfectly smooth. The final shiny finish is achieved with a buffing process that uses an extremely fine abrasive. Most monuments have at least some polished areas. ROCK PITCHED are rough, rock surfaces that have been pitched by hand using a hammer and chisel to achieve a finished, consistent rock effect. SAWN SIDES are smooth, but may have lines in the finish from the saw blade, and are generally used only for surfaces that will not be visible after the monument is installed. AXED PATTERNS are a wide variety of smooth and textured patterns made by pneumatic hammers and steel chisels. If a surface must be smooth but it cannot be sawed to that shape, it is usually axed by a skilled stone cutter. SHELL ROCK SURFACES are hand-cut, rustic surfaces with a strong, scalloped or dish shaped appearance, cut by a skilled cutter with a hammer and chisels. STEELED SURFACES are smooth surfaces that have been sandblasted using steel shot, which gives a bright, white, textured finish. Granite Slants & Bevel Memorials EVEL MARKERS - A bevel marker, sometimes called a pillow marker because of the gently sloping angle of the face, is a raised marker that rests above the ground. Like a flat marker, it sets flat at the grave site. The back of the grave marker is slightly higher than the front, making it more visible in a cemetery than a flat marker and can be finished with a wider variety of style and design options. Like flat markers, bevel markers come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and are set on a concrete foundation. SLANT MARKERS - A slant marker is usually 12 – 16 inches tall. While not tall enough to be considered an upright monument, a slanted grave marker has a wider base that slants towards the back presenting an upward profile that stands out in a cemetery because the granite is cut to sit at a steep angle. It can be placed on a solid granite base or installed directly on a poured concrete foundation. These markers can be finished with rough sides and top or with any number of sides polished.
